UP celebrates 117 years of innovation and impact

The University of Pretoria (UP) is commemorating 117 years of shaping minds and transforming lives. From its humble beginnings in 1908 to its current status as one of Africa’s leading institutions, UP’s journey embodies the spirit of progress and dedication to knowledge creation.

“As we mark our 117^th year, we celebrate not just our history, but the collective spirit that propels us forward,” said Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Francis Petersen when he addressed the UP community. “Our achievements in 2024 laid a strong foundation for an even more impactful future, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to academic excellence and societal transformation.”

The University’s remarkable journey is reflected in its core values, which continue to guide its mission. Academic excellence remains the cornerstone, evidenced by UP’s position as one of Africa’s top universities and its reputation for groundbreaking research. The institution's commitment to inclusivity and diversity has created a vibrant academic community where different perspectives enrich the learning experience.

“Working at UP has been more than just a job – it's been a journey of witnessing transformation and growth,” says staff member Thabo Mokalapa, who’s served the University for the past decade. “Every day, I see how this institution changes lives and opens doors for students from all walks of life. The spirit of innovation and excellence that permeates these halls is truly inspiring.”

Final-year Education student Thapelo Mokwena also reflected on this milestone.

“Being part of UP’s legacy during its 117^th birthday fills me with immense pride. This institution has not just provided education; it has nurtured dreams and shaped futures. The quality of education and the supportive environment here prepare us for making a real difference in society.”

UP’s 117th birthday will be celebrated across three campuses, where there will be exciting activities for all to enjoy:

• Hatfield campus, 10 February, from 11am to 2:30pm at the Aula and Rautenbach Hall. Includes staff members based at Hatfield, GIBS, Groenkloof, Enterprises, Mamelodi and Hillcrest campuses. RSVP by 3 February 2025.

• Onderstepoort campus, 14 February, from 1pm to 4:30pm at the OP Cafeteria. RSVP by 7 February 2025.
   
• Prinshof campus, 18 February, from 11am to 2:30pm on Tswelopele Square (or the parking basement in case of rain).
